2025 Alumni Award Honorees

Cedric Michael Cox (1994)
Contemporary Artist

Cedric Michael Cox’s paintings catapult color into rhythmic action with abstract and recognizable images that create compositions inspired by themes in music and the natural world. Cox has executed several large indoor and outdoor murals in various public and private schools, libraries, businesses, community centers, and hospitals within and around the Cincinnati region. Throughout his career, he has exhibited his work at the Contemporary Arts Center, the Weston Art Gallery, the 21c Museum Hotel (all in Cincinnati); the Columbus Art Museum, the Dayton Art Institute, Five Myles Gallery in Brooklyn, the Museum of Science and Industry and Gallery Guichard in Chicago, and James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. Currently, his work is on display at the Black Art in America Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia; the Houston Museum of African American Culture in Houston, Texas; and Akwaaba Gallery in Newark, New Jersey.

"I remember my first art class at Indian Hill Primary School. I was in the first grade, and Miss McKibbin had us use oil pastels to create imaginative characters. At the end of the two-day art lesson, Miss McKibbin held up my artwork and congratulated me for coloring up to the edge of the paper and for coloring my subject consistently and vividly. I was the new kid at the time, and there were barriers between me and the other students. The barriers faded away after my fellow classmates asked about how I executed the piece. I was always recognized for my creative ability, which led to more conversations, positive responses, and relationships that encouraged my creativity.

As it was then and still is now, art is the best way for me to communicate. The work ethic, drive, and responsibility to live up to the values that my parents instilled is why I am here, being what I was born to be. Indian Hill, like so many other positive outcomes in my life, was the catalyst for greater things to come."

“The Indian Hill community has meant so much to me and truly helped shape the person I am today. From the teachers who guided me, to the friends who supported me, and most importantly, to where I met my wife—my biggest inspiration. I’m incredibly honored to be recognized by the Indian Hill Foundation and deeply grateful for this award."
