English Language Learners

Many parents ask what they can do at home to help their child learn English.  There are several ways you can help.  First, please understand that during the first few weeks, your child will be very tired from being in an environment where a new language is spoken all day.  It is important that you allow your child to speak his or her native language at home.  If your child reads, encourage him to read in his native language as well.  If you and your child wish, you may help him or her to learn simple words or phrases in English.

The following is helpful for beginning students
  1. Your child should know his or her name, address, and phone number and be able to say them in English.
  2. Your child should be able to tell when he or she doesn’t understand saying, “I don’t understand.”
  3. It would be helpful for them to know the English alphabet, numbers, and colors.
  4. Your child should practice the English alphabet if it is different from the alphabet of his or her native language.

If your lessons at home are short and fun, they will not be too tiring for your child, but if your child resists, please do not push them; They will learn quickly at school!

The most important thing you can do to help your child learn English is to encourage them to play or socialize with English-speaking children.  Because children learn easily in play or social situations, this is a fun and easy way for your child to acquire their new language.
