Indian Hill High School student wins prestigious Cincinnati Arts Association Overture Awards scholarship

Franny Bell

The Indian Hill School District congratulates Indian Hill High School (IHHS) junior Franny Bell for earning a $1,000 scholarship as part of the Cincinnati Arts Association Overture Awards Competition. Bell was named a finalist in February along with sophomore Lillie Waltz, who was not available to compete in finals this year.

“The Overture awards have been really inspiring to me over my high school career,” said Bell. “The feedback from the judges is always so helpful and encouraging and offers a new perspective every time. All of the students are so talented in their different disciplines, and it's so exciting to get to perform with them in the finals this year.”

According to their website, the Overture Awards is a program that recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in the arts among Greater Cincinnati students in grades 9-12. Its mission is to encourage arts education as an integral part of a student’s academic experience and to create an environment that encourages training in, and appreciation of, the arts. The Overture Awards Competition is the area’s largest solo arts competition and offers awards in six artistic disciplines: creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual art, and vocal music.

Bell was one of only four finalists named for the Theatre category in February. She performed two pieces live on Saturday, March 25 at the Aronoff Center in the Jarson-Kaplan Theater, including a monologue from “A Midsummer Night's Dream” and the song “Nothing Short of Wonderful” from the musical “Dogfight.” She plans to pursue a degree in Musical Theatre after high school.
