Indian Hill Middle School Brave Virtual Academy (BVA) students put design skills to the test and scored big at the Future City Regional Competition held virtually during February. The Indian Hill Middle School Future City Team of Myles Chen, Nolan Horton, Luke Bergstrom, Arpad Lallement, and Aaron Scott earned second place overall also bringing home the Best Transportation award.
“This team overcame many difficulties working in a virtual environment and they rose to the occasion,” said Amanda Sopko, Indian Hill Middle School math teacher and Future City mentor. “I am so proud of their hard work and dedication to this competition!”
The Future City Competition is a national, not-for-profit education program. Across the country, approximately 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools participate in the competition which introduces students to different engineering fields, such as civil, electrical, chemical, agricultural, biomedical, mechanical, computer software, and hardware engineering. This year, teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders researched technologies, designed cities, presented plans and models, and wrote 1,500-word essays on the topic, “Living on the Moon.”
“Our students met on Thursday mornings before school and Saturday mornings to work on their design,” said Sopko. “During that time, the students honed their creativity and collaboration skills and put their imaginations to work to develop solutions for our future. With the dedication we witnessed from our amazing Braves, I know we are in good hands! We have some remarkable future leaders!”
