BRAVE Room: Indian Hill thinks outside the classroom to help students learn

IHES BRAVE Room

Indian Hill Elementary School (IHES) debuts a new grant-funded student space for the 2019-2020 school year dedicated to social-emotional learning for all third, fourth, and fifth grade students. The BRAVE Room is an optional space for students to utilize in order to calm their mind or body, reduce stress, recharge, and learn strategies needed to regulate their emotions throughout the school day.

“We wanted to create a space for all students to proactively access healthy coping techniques,” said IHES Counselor Sarah Kellett. “When students feel safe emotionally, they are more likely to take an academic risk and also more likely to build resiliency skills and growth mindset. We want to support students in every step of this growth with a secured space, resources, the opportunity for self-reflection, and strategies.”

IHES secured funding for the BRAVE Room through “Grants for Kids: Learning Links” through the Greater Cincinnati Foundation for $1000.

“We had a vision for this space, and the grant allowed us to turn that full vision into a reality for our Braves,” said IHES Principal Whitney Buell. “This space is about offering our students positive and proactive strategies that will help them in all areas of study, and we are thrilled to provide this type of support.”

Students will have an orientation of the space, tools, and calming techniques through lessons with Kellett. They will then be able to proactively take breaks following a few easy steps, and they will be able to spend five to 10 minutes practicing different strategies that have been introduced.
