Indian Hill Elementary School students win BIG in Stock Market Game

IHES Stock Market Winners

The Indian Hill School District celebrates Indian Hill Elementary School (IHES) for securing nine of the top 10 elementary teams in the state – including first place – for the Stock Market Game, sponsored by the non-profit Alpaugh Family Economics Center, University of Cincinnati (UC). The winning team included IHES students Sebastian Malott, Glenn Ernest, and Maddox Wegrzyn.

“By fostering financial literacy at an early age, we empower students to navigate economic challenges, cultivate responsible habits, and build a solid foundation for future financial success,” said Indian Hill Elementary School Principal Whitney Buell. “Education in financial literacy serves as a compass, guiding young learners toward a path of economic empowerment, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for the value of financial knowledge.”

The Stock Market Game is a 10-week simulation in which students research and invest in companies of their choice. Their success in the game is directly related to their research and the real-time results of the companies in which they invested. These results reflect the fall Stock Market Game, which took place from October 2 through December 8, 2023.

“Participation in the Stock Market Game is often an introduction to elements of financial literacy,” said Indian Hill Elementary School teacher Betsy Henning. “Students learn as they are playing, and since the simulation is in real-time, it adds an extra layer of excitement to the learning. Each year our fifth-grade students are excited to begin the Stock Market Game, especially when they have heard about it from older siblings. I continue to be proud of the growth students make.”

“Indian Hill Elementary School is grateful to our always supportive Indian Hill PTO; the support organization has sponsored the participation of the entire fifth grade class for three consecutive years,” said Buell. “This creates an inclusive learning opportunity in which all of our students have a chance to learn these important skills and thrive.”
