The Indian Hill School District celebrates Indian Hill High School Latin teacher Melissa Burgess, named a 2025 Merens Award recipient by the American Classical League (ACL). This prestigious honor, the highest presented by the ACL, recognizes Burgess for her sustained and distinguished service to the Classics profession and her exceptional contributions to the ACL.

“This is a truly special recognition for an educator who exemplifies passion, leadership, and excellence in everything she does,” said Indian Hill High School Principal Andy Gruber. “Melissa Burgess has dedicated her career to inspiring students and building a legacy of love for Latin and the Classics. Her impact reaches far beyond our classrooms. We sincerely congratulate her on this distinguished and deserved award.”

A pillar of Indian Hill High School, Burgess has served as department chair, mentor to new teachers, and cooperating teacher for student teachers. She is deeply involved in school life, lending her expertise to numerous committees and working tirelessly to ensure that Latin is accessible and engaging for every student.

“Teaching Latin is not just about language, it's about connecting students with a rich history and cultural foundation that informs so much of the modern world,” said Burgess. “I'm honored to receive this award, but even more honored to teach such amazing students every day.”

Burgess is also renowned for her work outside the classroom. She has coordinated countless educational trips for students and adults to Italy and the Mediterranean, giving learners firsthand cultural experiences. Her students consistently describe her as supportive, engaging, and committed to their success.

A national leader in Classical education, Burgess has served as Ohio’s State Chair, sponsored more than 15 student officers, and led award-winning student delegations to conventions year after year. Her national service includes a decade-long tenure as Chair of the Graphic Arts Contest for the National Junior Classical League (NJCL) and her current role as Colloquia Coordinator for the 2025 NJCL Convention.

The American Classical League, founded in 1919, exists to celebrate, support, and advance the teaching and learning of Greek and Latin languages, literatures, and cultures, highlighting their enduring relevance.
