It was a reversal of roles for Indian Hill High School (IHHS) students who were invited to present at the Ohio Association for College Admissions Counseling (OACAC) and Guiding the Way (GWI) to Inclusion Annual Conference. IHHS students became the teachers during the conference titled, STRONGER TOGETHER, which took place virtually, March 15-16.
“Here, I have discovered my role as a supporter, listener, and learner,” shared Indian Hill High School student-presenter Maya Anderson. “Our open dialogue and personal reflections have provided me an informative space to learn about the history of racism and how to effectively institute change.”
Maya Anderson was one of four IHHS students who spoke about Courageous Conversations, part of a student and staff inclusion program within the Indian Hill School District. Anderson was joined by fellow students Emery Cunningham, Tacey Hutten, and Ethan Marx for the presentation that also included current educators who work as mentors with the students.
“Courageous Conversations has allowed me to grow as a black female in a predominantly white school,” shared Indian Hill High School student-presenter Emery Cunningham. “It has taught me that things need to change in our world and that starting the change in high school can start an educated path for others.”
During the workshop, students guided participants through a series of exercises and conversations. The purpose of their chat was to help admissions professionals become more aware of potential blind spots in the recruiting process and to leave with a renewed sense of making authentic connections with students during the application process.
“It is so inspiring when our students speak and adults take note,” said Indian Hill High School Teacher Austin Sayre, who serves as a mentor for the Courageous Conversations program. “I'm so proud that they are able to take their learning into the world to make change.”
“These students are to be celebrated,” said Indian Hill High School Counselor Donita Jackson, who also works as a mentor with the program. “I'm so grateful for their courage and commitment to learn and educate!”
