You may want to contact the Indian Hill Elementary School (IHES) fifth-grade class! Out of 123 teams, the Braves placed in rankings 1-11 in The Stock Market Game, sponsored by the non-profit Alpaugh Family Economics Center, University of Cincinnati. One IHES team placed first overall.

“We are incredibly proud of all of our students, and we thank our IH PTO for providing the funds for every fifth-grade student to participate during this school year,” said Indian Hill Elementary School Principal Whitney Buell. “These rankings are from October to December, when half of the grade, 93 students, participated in the fall session of the game. We look forward to seeing how the other half of our students excel.”

“Applying math skills in real-world scenarios helps our students to learn financial literacy and become active participants in the economy,” said Betsy Henning, Indian Hill Elementary School instructional coach. Henning met with the student teams weekly alongside teacher Amanda Sopko to mentor the young investors, introducing them to concepts and planning required to invest wisely.

“Our students studied companies and trends to decide upon profitable investments,” said Henning. “While they learned from the success of their investments, they also learned quite a bit from those less successful investments. Students were engaged in discussion and research, and collaborated on all decisions.”

The Indian Hill Elementary School first-place team earned more than $21,000 in 10 weeks. The team included students Jenny Willingham, Devyanshie Rautela, and Chloe Luther. The team will compete in the Portfolio Challenge this spring at the University of Cincinnati.

“I liked seeing how math is used in the real world,” said winning team member Devyanshie Rautela. “We tried to diversify the companies we invested in. We would search a company’s stock and see how well they had done in the past, and we looked at the company’s history.”

“It was fun and exciting,” added team member Jenny Willingham. “It was a taste of the future.”
