Thanks to IHHS educators Michelle Shafer and Kaitlin Shurts for encouraging their Science students to participate in this real-world problem-solving project.
As part of a community-centered project, students will participate in the Caring for Our Watersheds contest (link here: https://caringforourwatersheds.com/), hosted by Nutrien and the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District. The goal of the contest is to identify realistic and innovative solutions to address concerns related to our local watershed. Students will begin by researching and identifying a specific issue affecting the watershed in our community.
They will then develop creative and practical solutions aimed at improving the health and sustainability of the watershed. The solutions will not only focus on innovation but also on practicality—ensuring that they are realistic and can be implemented by the students within the local community. Once their ideas are refined, students will submit their proposals to Nutrien and the Hamilton County Soil and Water for review. But the project doesn’t stop there. After submitting their proposals, students will actively implement their solutions within the community.
Finally, as part of the project’s culmination, students will create presentations to share their experiences, solutions, and the impact they’ve made on the watershed. These presentations will be shared with both the class and the wider community, allowing for a celebration of their work and a chance to inspire further positive change. Through this hands-on project, students will engage in problem-solving, community service, and environmental stewardship while making a tangible difference in our local watershed.
The Indian HIll Foundation is proud to support grants that extend the educational experience and impact beyond the classroom!
