Indian Hill Master Class: Welcome HOME, Roberta Willis!

IH Master Class

Welcome to Indian Hill Master Class! This school year, we are using this annual series as a celebration to highlight the exceptional people who curate a feeling of HOME for our students, our families, and each other. This month, Interim Assistant Superintendent Whitney Buell shines the spotlight on Indian Hill alum, district parent, and educator Roberta Willis.

Whitney Buell (WB): Roberta, you are an alum, a parent, and you work with students in a guided study hall, so you have so many perspectives. First, tell us what it means to you to be a member of the Brave Family in each of these roles?

Roberta Willis (RW): Being a member of the Brave family has meant so much to me. I was privileged to receive an excellent education and made great friendships from kindergarten. I also met my husband of 41 years here. As a parent, my children were fortunate to have excellent teachers and have made lifelong friends. I could have not asked for a better educational opportunity for my boys. I know that the time they spent here has helped them become successful adults.

WB: What do you do within your role as an educator to create a sense of Home for each student you work with?

RW: I am really enjoying working with my students this year. Guided study hall and support have given me an opportunity to connect with students on a different level than working in a one-on-one situation. The guided study hall classroom is set up in a way to allow our students to be comfortable in the space. We've made a concerted effort to provide a space that they feel is their own. I try to make sure they know I am an adult they can come to if problems arise no matter how big or small.  I always let them know if they need anything I will do whatever I can to help them. I know that for some students we are the safest place in their day. There are times when students come to guided study hall and just need to have someone to listen, and I do my best to make sure I am there for them.

WB: What is your greatest hope for our district as a graduate, as a parent, and as a member of the team?

RW: My greatest hope for the district as a graduate is that we continue to strive for excellence in every aspect of working with every child. I am so excited by the continued development of the Unified Champions programs throughout all the buildings and the institution of the unified classes. I am so impressed with the true commitment we as a district have made to working for the benefit of the whole child. We are moving beyond just being worried about academics and have really embraced the idea that what we do here has an impact on every aspect of a child's life. I believe we continue to set the standard for what an exemplary public education should look like.
