What is the Braves Opportunity Scholarship?
This boldly generous scholarship is conceived and funded by anonymous donors who have immense pride in the Indian Hill School District and want motivated IH students to be able to pursue their best college opportunities free from financial limitations. The scholarship is intended to cover the costs of up to four years of the post-secondary education of the recipient’s choice after all financial aid options from the institution have been calculated, covering tuition, room & board and fees. Here is the progress update on the first three recipients!
ALEX TRAN - Purdue University, First year
Alex has a challenging schedule as an Engineering major, but has a plan to graduate in three years.
He plans to use the extra year for Purdue's PLUS ONE program to earn his Master’s degree.
Alex will start an internship at Toyota, south of Ann Arbor, in May. His role will be specific to high-level vehicle design, both internal and external, for passenger minivans.
JOY ON - Case Western University, 2nd year
Joy is majoring in Psychology, with the potential to double with Sociology and Japanese.
She is enjoying campus life with 5 suite mates and being involved in many clubs on campus.
She was an enthusiastic organizer of CWU's Japanese Cultural Fest – participating on the executive committee to promote
advocacy, diversity, connecting and more for the Japanese community.
Joy is also an undergraduate research assistant with the CWRU PTSD Research and Treatment lab. She is
currently working with a research team running a study to evaluate a new evidence-based therapy for PTSD.
Joy adds, "As my first experience with a lab, it has been new, but that has made it both interesting and exciting."
Advice she would give to current Braves. “The answer is no, unless you try” and
“Try your best to open up to different opportunities; it gives life so much more color.”
GULIRANO ALMURATOVA - Harvard University, 3rd year
Gulirano is studying Statistics and Sociology and is a course assistant for Math.
She is a co- president for the club HPAIR (Harvard Project for Asian International Relations) and interning as an event planner for the Social Organizations Committee on campus.
"My favorite activity in Boston has been visiting the museums here, they’re really great. At Harvard, my favorite activity has been to visit all the different libraries on campus to study. I am forever grateful to have the Harvard experience.”
Advice she would give current Braves – “try out a lot of different things before you make
your decisions.” She encourages students to "shadow with someone, utilize LinkedIn, coffee chat, participate!"
