Each year, we look forward to special celebrations honoring Black history makers during Black History Month. This February, our students will celebrate across all buildings within the Indian Hill School District in uniquely Indian Hill ways. We wanted to share some of the celebrations taking place at our buildings that will honor this important learning.
Indian Hill Primary School (IHPS):
• Students will explore the idea that children can change the world by reading about the story of Ayanna Najuma.
• In both reading and morning meetings, children will be introduced to young Black leaders.
• Children will engage in lessons about standing up for what you believe in to make a positive change in the world.
• Thanks to the generosity of the IH PTO and their funding of the Rosa Jason Honor library collection, teachers will be able to utilize a wide variety of children's literature with diverse characters, rich representation, histories, and identities that represent our community of learners.
Indian Hill Elementary School (IHES):
• Each day during morning announcements, IHES will feature a short biography of prominent African Americans who have made significant contributions in key areas such as cultural movements, music and arts, business and science, and sports. During this segment, students will have the opportunity to listen to musical performances by various African American artists.
• Students will enjoy listening to "There Was a Party for Langston," a book written and read by Jason Reynolds, which celebrates Black authors and artists.
• Students and teachers will have access to a variety of books and resources highlighting famous African Americans who have made significant impacts on our country and the world.
Indian Hill Middle School (IHMS):
• Throughout the month, IHMS is celebrating Black history facts and figures in announcements and on digital signage, including the jumbo screen in the Village Green.
• During advisory, students will participate in a National Geographic virtual field trip celebrating the contributions of Black Explorers from the past and present. We will explore the North Pole with Matthew Henson, examine the importance of Green Book sites with Candacy Taylor, launch to the moon with Katherine Johnson, and tell stories with Asha Stuart.
• Also during advisory, students will reflect and connect with inspirational quotes of resilience and perseverance from impactful Black Americans, both past and present.
Indian Hill High School (IHHS):
• Daily Black History facts will be shared with the high school during morning announcements.
• A display will be posted at the entryway to the high school with notable Black people.
• An all-school presentation will be held celebrating music and art.
• Our cafeteria will serve special entrees during February, celebrating the rich history and cultural flavors of African Americans.
We appreciate all our Braves for making the celebration of this month so meaningful.
