Indian Hill Elementary students win Ohio Stock Market Game!

Indian Hill Elementary School (IHES) congratulates fifth-grade students Ainsley Johnson  and Vivian Jenkins for bringing home a state championship title in the elementary division of the University of Cincinnati (UC) Economics Center Stock Market Game! Johnson and Jenkins invested $100,000 (virtual money) during a 10-week period beginning in October and ending in December; the students were tasked with monitoring their investments each week.

“It was neat to see how we went from 49th place to first place in one week after making some different investments,” said IHES Student Ainsley Johnson.

“I feel this experience is important for students to learn lifelong skills about investments and the economy,” said IHES Teacher Betsy Henning who worked as a mentor to the students during the competition. “I also feel it is important for them to see math applications in the real world.”

As part of the learning, the students interviewed adult investors at Indian Hill Elementary School, their parents, grandparents, and they studied the terms and history of the stock market — including doing several simulations about the market. They also stayed informed on current events.

“This was a great opportunity to learn about teamwork and money,” said IHES Student Vivian Jenkins. “I like that I was able to talk with my parents and my grandparents about it.”

The Indian Hill Board of Education formally recognized the state champions during the January 8 meeting. The competition doesn’t end with state; in April the students will present their learning to a group of financial professionals at UC and compete for a trip to New York City.
